Born in Lubek, Germany in 1962, Joydeep Maharaj grew up in Kolkata with a passion for literature and theatre. After completing his schooling from Don Bosco, he studied literature in English from Jadavpur University. He wrote and directed many significant plays which were staged and performed in various parts of Bengal. And his writings got published in numerous Bengali and English magazines. But his deep quest for a spiritual identity drew him away from the mainstream. He travelled extensively through the Himalayas, he wandered around the banks of Narmada, met numerous monks to quench his deep thirst of finding the true meaning of life. At this turbulent juncture he met Swami Paramananda, who later became his mentor and Guru. He was reborn into a wholly new perspective and he gave up his job and joined Paramananda mission. Soon he became a close companion of Swami Paramananda and a very important figure in the development of the ashram. He wrote extensively in “Charaibati” magazine both in Bengali and English and groomed numerous orphans in the ashram towards a meaningful cultural expression. He translated Swami Paramananda’s works in English and also wrote a drama called “Shishuraj” (the little king) which was popular among kids and appreciated by many. For ten years he meditated and devoted himself to the mission of Swami Paramananda. After Swami Paramananda left his body, Joydeep Maharaj came to Singur in Hooghly. Guru Maharaj had inspired and motivated him to become a spiritual orator. And he started a new journey of inspiring people with his insights on life both in India and abroad. He kept on writing and published a book named Kaaldrasta (The Seer of Time) which is a very advanced and dynamic research on practical spiritual science and life. His words and teachings continue to inspire the young generation of our time. Later. in 2011, he established a spiritual retreat, Maramia in Azimganj Murshidabad where he presently works and lives. After twenty eight years of intense spiritual practice Joydeep Maharaj considers himself a Baul, a traveller of the path, a seeker of truth. He travels and talks, inspires and guides people from all walks of life to a spiritual vision and freedom. Many people from Europe and various parts of our country come to Maramia to experience the art of life and living. His words and views are not only a voice of freedom and love but also a hint of the beautiful truth within us.
